In Indigenous traditions of the Maluku (Molucca) Islands—clove’s place of origin—the tree has long been regarded as sacred, with cultural beliefs holding that planting a clove tree at a child’s birth conferred protection and prosperity throughout their life. In African and Afro-diasporic spiritual systems influenced by Indian Ocean trade routes and later colonial movement, clove has been used as a protective and commanding botanical, burned as incense to repel harmful influences, silence gossip, and attract material abundance.
Across Black diasporic folk practices in the Caribbean and parts of the Americas, clove appears in protection work, money charms, and love-drawing formulas, valued for its strong, fiery presence and ability to “heat up” spiritual workings. Clove is the dried flower bud of an evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia and a member of the Myrtaceae family. It has been cultivated for thousands of years across East Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Americas, largely due to historic trade networks and colonial expansion. In Indigenous Indonesian traditions, clove held ceremonial and cultural importance long before its commodification in the global spice trade.
In African, Middle Eastern, Indian, and Asian traditional systems, clove has been valued as a warming, aromatic botanical used in culinary, aromatic, and traditional preparations. It is referenced in Ayurveda as lavanga and in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a warming spice associated with movement and vitality.
