Cramp Bark is the bark of Viburnum opulus, a deciduous shrub native to Europe and later naturalized in parts of North America. It has a long history of use in European folk herbalism and holds particular significance in Slavic folklore, where the guelder rose appears in art, song, and cultural symbolism connected to vitality, continuity, and the land.
In North America, closely related Viburnum species—most notably Viburnum opulus var. americanum and Viburnum prunifolium (black haw)—were used by several Indigenous nations in traditional practices, particularly in relation to women’s health and seasonal balance.
