Damiana is a woody shrub native to Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and parts of the southern United States. It has a well-documented history of use among Indigenous peoples of Mexico, including the Guaycura, and was later adopted by the Aztec and Maya, who valued it as both a pleasurable beverage and a plant associated with vitality and desire. Traditionally, the leaves were infused as a tea or prepared in other simple forms and shared across generations.
In Mexico and throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, damiana has remained a culturally significant plant, later entering Afro-Caribbean and Latin American folk traditions through shared Indigenous knowledge and regional exchange.
