Magical & Spiritual Uses

Devil’s Shoestring is a powerful root worked with for protection, uncrossing, hex-breaking, and spiritual defense. In Black American Hoodoo and Southern conjure traditions, it is one of the most widely recognized roots for guarding against trickery, harmful magic, spiritual attack, and ill intent. It is traditionally carried on the person, added to mojo bags, placed near doorways, or worked into floor washes and protection rites to “tie up” negative forces before they can take hold.

Devil’s Shoestring is also used to maintain spiritual boundaries, reinforce personal sovereignty, and prevent crossed conditions from returning once cleared. Its Saturnian nature aligns it with endurance, spiritual law, and firm protection—especially for those who work spiritually, travel often, or move between energetic spaces.

Indigenous & Black Diasporic Context

In African American Hoodoo and conjure, Devil’s Shoestring holds deep cultural significance as a root of protection and counter-work. Its use was passed down through oral tradition, rootwork practice, and lived experience, particularly in the Southeastern United States. The root is commonly associated with keeping trouble “tied up,” preventing gossip, and stopping spiritual interference.

The plant most commonly sold as Devil’s Shoestring in conjure markets is native to North America, and related species were known to Indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands, who worked with Viburnum species as protective and boundary-setting plants. Over time, this knowledge entered African American folk magic through proximity, shared land use, and survival-based plant knowledge exchange. These references are shared as cultural and historical context only.

Traditional & Folk Context

Devil’s Shoestring is not typically approached as a culinary or casual botanical. Its primary role has been spiritual rather than domestic, with emphasis on protection, warding, and spiritual containment. The roots are long, fibrous, and visually distinctive—contributing to both their name and their symbolic association with binding, restraint, and defense.
