Magical & Spiritual Uses

Mullein has long been regarded as a torchbearer plant—associated with courage, protection, and illumination in both the physical and spiritual realms. Its tall flowering stalk, rising like a golden candle, has symbolized the ability to bring light into darkness, making it a powerful ally for protection, banishing, and spiritual strength.

Traditionally, mullein has been carried or placed in the home for protection from unwanted spiritual influences and to strengthen personal resilience. It has been used in protection sachets, ritual incense, and spiritual cleansing work. Mullein is also associated with courage and may be worked with when facing difficult transitions, spiritual challenges, or periods requiring inner fortitude.

In love and divination work, mullein has been used to gain clarity around relationships and to strengthen the heart’s resolve. The flowering stalk has historically been used as a symbolic tool for seeking truth and spiritual guidance. These uses are shared as cultural and historical context only.

Indigenous & Diasporic Context

Although mullein was introduced to North America through European contact, many Indigenous nations incorporated the plant into their botanical and spiritual traditions. The Cherokee used mullein leaves in poultices and ritual applications, and the Abnaki made necklaces from the root for infants. The Navajo referred to mullein as “big tobacco” and incorporated it into ceremonial smoking blends.

In North American folk spiritual practices, including Appalachian and Southern conjure traditions, mullein has been associated with protection, spirit communication, and strengthening the spiritual body. Its historical use as a torch plant reinforces its symbolic role as a guide and protector.

Botanical & Herbal Context

Verbascum thapsus is a biennial plant in the Scrophulariaceae family, easily recognized by its large, soft, silvery-green leaves and tall stalk of bright yellow flowers. In its first year, it forms a basal rosette, and in its second year sends up a tall flowering spike that may reach several feet in height.

Mullein thrives in poor or disturbed soils and is considered a pioneer plant, helping restore and improve soil conditions. Historically, its dried stalks were dipped in fat or wax and used as torches, earning it the name “candlewick plant.”

Herbally, mullein has been prepared as tea, extract, oil infusion, and syrup. It has been widely respected in traditional herbal practices in both Europe and North America.
